The inspiration behind Timothy Whealon’s debut rug collection for Patterson Flynn Martin goes beyond the typical orals and expected neutrals. Rather, the muses for the interior designer’s 18 rugs all possess a bit of magic: vintage card decks, legendary views of Mykonos, scenes of Roman ruins and even an Arabian magic carpet. “It’s such a diverse collection as far as designs, materials and price points, so I think the possibilities are endless,” Whealon says.
The hand knotted or handwoven pieces are geometric in style with distinctive imagery throughout. Several of the prints resemble gardens and tiles Whealon has seen during his travels, and Luck Be a Lady was influenced by childhood memories of his mother’s bridge club. “These are the kinds of rugs that are beautifully crafted and timeless,” says Dara Caponigro, creative director of parent company Schumacher, who approached Whealon about a collaboration after first working with him in London nearly 20 years ago. “They are tomorrow’s heirlooms.” Price upon request, pattersonynnmartin.com
