Located minutes from Grand Teton National Park, an hour from Yellowstone and surrounded by stunning mountains, rivers and a massive blue sky, Jackson, Wyo., is a nature lover’s paradise.

Now there’s a gorgeous new hotel in the neighborhood, located right on Jackson’s historic town square, mere steps from everything the charming Western town has to offer. Enter, The Cloudveil.

Jackson Hole has been a kind of mystical Shangri-La for as long as I can remember. The outdoorsy allure of it all—and the glowy, healthy friends who rave about its natural appeal and Western charms—has put the Wyoming destination on my bucket list for decades.

And I’m not alone. Jackson—which was established in 1894—and the surrounding areas have attracted major business leaders, billionaires and celebrities over the years, including Harrison Ford, Tyler Perry and Sandra Bullock. Beyond that, the area’s excellent ski resorts—Jackson Hole Mountain, Snow King Mountain and Grand Targhee—draw in devotees of the sport, while its lush rivers and national parks attract anyone who appreciates nature’s abundance.

My husband and I finally got to experience what I’ve long been dreaming of this summer when we visited Jackson and stayed at the most perfect property, The Cloudveil. Part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection—which boasts a collection of 190 unique, design-forward properties around the globe—the hotel is the first luxury property located directly on Jackson’s historic square. Our trip truly begins at Jackson Hole Airport, the only airport in the U.S. located within a national park. As we exit the plane to views of the Teton mountain range, we feel overpowered by the area’s majestic beauty. U2’s song “In God’s Country” runs through my head on repeat.

After a quick 10-minute ride we arrive at The Cloudveil, our driver pointing out spots for the best sandwiches (Creekside Market), coffee (Cowboy Coffee Co.) and more. The hotel happens to be across the street from what must be the most popular ice cream shop (Moo’s Gourmet Ice Cream), as evident from the snaking lines. Although brand-new, due to the thoughtful modern Western design and architecture by TruexCullins, CLB Architects and IBI Group, the hotel fits right into its surroundings and feels as if it’s been there forever. Locally sourced raw, natural materials are embedded into the design, as seen in the three-story rock wall and oversize fireplace, the front desk fashioned from a 3,000-pound boulder, and furniture and accessories made from rustic leather and skins. Books about the area are scattered across the lobby, beckoning guests to hang out. Art and photography by local artists hangs throughout the entire hotel.

Other areas of the hotel—including our thoughtfully appointed room, the pool and hot tub area, the rooftop space with views of the valley and more—also exude a warm, welcoming feel—a clean, contemporary take on Western design. One space that has a different, more Parisian vibe is the hotel’s all-day seasonal brasserie, The Bistro, helmed by restaurateurs Gavin Fine and Roger Freedman of Fine Dining Restaurant Group.

The hotel did a fantastic job curating our itinerary. Over three days, we take an exhilarating whitewater rafting trip down the Snake River and enjoy an unforgettable nighttime safari at Grand Teton National Park, where we spy bison, elk, pronghorn antelope and even a bald eagle. Our incredible guide takes us to areas throughout the park that seem pulled from a fairy tale. Seeing Jenny Lake at sunset, with the sky tinged with violet, pink and fiery orange, is a sight I’ll not soon forget.

Between excursions we explore Jackson, shopping (Habits, JD High Country Outfitters, Tayloe Piggott Gallery); eating (Persephone, King Sushi, The Kitchen); and soaking up the area’s great energy.
