Tesla’s Cybertruck stole the LA Auto Show and it wasn’t even there. Make no mistake about it, the Cybertruck’s styling is controversial and not just another body on frame pickup truck. Elon Musk has pushed the envelope once again, and some say he pushed it too far this time, but when you start breaking down the details of the design and looking at the specs, no matter how you slice it, the Cybertruck is one hell of a truck.

Take the Cybertruck’s unique exoskeleton construction. Tesla lead designer, Franz von Holzhausen demonstrated the Cybertruck’s body strength by taking a sledgehammer to its ultra-hard 30X cold-rolled stainless-steel structural skin. The result was nary a scratch, while the same sledgehammer completely destroyed what appeared to be a Ford F-150’s door. Oh, and did we mention that Musk claims the Cybertruck’s panels resists bullets shot from a 9mm gun? On the other hand, Tesla’s high strength armor glass didn’t fair as well in von Holzhausen’s next strength demonstration, where he managed to crack the glass after throwing a metal ball at it. Elon remarked that there was room for improvement in the side glass, but to focus on the side glass snafu would be missing the truck’s incredible achievements.

Those achievements include the $69,900 Cybertruck model running from zero to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds, faster than a Porsche 911 (let alone an F-150). Other achievements include a towing capacity of 14,000 plus pounds (better than an F-150), and an EPA estimated range of over 500 miles. Even the mid-tier $49,900 Cybertruck is an incredible value. Compared with the Rivian R1T 135 kWh, which will be priced at over $70,000, the Cybertruck will save you $30,000 get you the same range, offer a longer bed (6.5-feet vs 4.5-feet), more ground clearance and faster charging (not to mention the Cybertruck’s incredible trick 100 cubic feet of lockable exterior storage thanks to its covered bed).

Tesla is already accepting preorders on its website, tesla.com/cybertruck. All it takes to reserve yours is a fully refundable $100. Production is expected to begin in late 2021, with the tri motor AWD set to start rolling off the line in late 2022. If you can get past its radical exterior design, the Cybertruck is, right now, unbeatable in its pre-production form.
