The Coachella lineup usually comes in one massive, head-turning drop—but this year, the annual Indio Valley music festival has decided to announce one big headliner ahead of schedule.

EDM hit-makers Swedish House Mafia are the first official performers at Coachella 2022. The booking was teased via an Instagram post that depicted the group’s three members standing in silhouette before the familiar Coachella valley mountains.

Both the event’s official account and the trio’s shared the photo, and the veracity of the tease was confirmed to Modern Luxury by Swedish House Mafia’s publicist.

It’s big news for Swedish House Mafia fans who know how rare a performance from the trio can be. It comes a day before the group’s latest single, a collaboration with pop icon The Weeknd. The new tune will be the group’s second this year, marking a new sound and a big return for the group who haven’t released any new music since 2012’s international hit “Don’t You Worry Child.”

Swedish House Mafia is an electronic music supergroup made up of previously-successful solo DJs and producers Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso and Axwell. All hail from Stockholm where they came up in the music scene as friends and peers.

They joined forces as SHM in 2008 and found success with hit singles “One (Your Name),” “Miami 2 Ibiza” and “Save The World.” The band released two albums and headlined major music festivals around the world before disbanding suddenly in 2013.

The group reunited briefly in 2018 to play a handful of shows but never released any new music until this year’s single “It Gets Better,” which was released on Republic Records in July of 2021.

Coachella will return to Indio Valley in April after two years off due to COVID-19. Original Coachella 2020 headliners Rage Against the Machine and Travis Scott are confirmed to reappear. Swedish House Mafia takes the place of Frank Ocean. No telling which if any acts from the original 2020 lineup will return. The festival usually announces its full lineup in January. Tickets are not yet on sale. Learn more via coachella.com.
