In the fitness industry, trends are constantly evolving. Whether it’s a hot new spin class, an Instagram video or a celebrity workout regimen, it’s clear that fitness fads continue to change with the times. But for leading professional fitness expert Derek Williams, his doctrine stems from longevity and proven philosophy. Today with what some may call unorthodox, Williams breaks barriers with his training style as he not only helps people understand how they can meet their fitness goals, but he additionally provides guidelines to help people create longevity and health when it comes to fitness. So instead of a quickly fading fitness trend, Williams offers a lifetime of strength and wellness.
Between his work with ATG Online Coaching and his own personal brand as Mr. 1nf1n1ty, Derek opens up about his commitment to his work and how he strives to bring global awareness to the world with a best-kept-secret-like training.
How/why did you get into fitness professionally?
Derek Williams: I’ve always kept a pulse on/or had a position in the fitness industry. I have always felt that the discipline, knowledge and commitment it takes to maintain a healthy fit body is what I wanted, and I wanted to surround myself with others of that mindset. I came in contact with Ben Patrick and ATG to really get a new way of training into the global consciousness. We both knew there was a huge void in the fitness world, and that our job is to fill that void.
How would you describe your training philosophy and style?
DW: Our training style is basically ‘Strength through Length’. We teach athletes how to develop strength and power in the furthest range of motion, allowing for full maximum output of these muscles creating TRUE FORCE. We have developed a training system that is creating miracles every day.
How has your training style specifically impacted your life?
DW: My training style has been instrumental in helping me overcome years and years of knee pain, structural imbalances and stiff joints. I feel better today in my forties than at any other point in my life, and I’m only getting better.
In your experience working with high-level professional athletes, you’ve managed to help them extend their careers. How does your type of training promote longevity?
DW: Our style of training allows your body to move as nature intended. We create exercises to bring your body back into balance and then incorporate weights and flexibility to generate power and force. Many old and young athletes come to us broken down and end up pain free and more athletic than ever.
Where did the inspiration to create your own Mr. 1nf1n1ty fitness products come from?
DW: The inspiration came out of necessity. As I and ATG grow, thousands of athletes need the tools necessary to perform our workouts and get maximum results. We have several more products in the works that will evolve sport performance forever.
Why would you describe your training style as unorthodox?
DW: ATG is a new way of thinking when it comes to training the human body. After we grow enough and have enough miracles happen, millions and millions of belief systems will be shattered, and millions of books will be rewritten just to keep up. We are operating in light speed and are not waiting for ‘science’ to catch up to the TRUTH. I know that might be a controversial statement, but every pioneer had to blaze a new trail.
How can your philosophy on training improve health and longevity in one’s life?
DW: My philosophy on health and training goes beyond the body. I feel once great health, fitness, and training principles are understood and applied your physical body goes in alignment and great health and longevity are the byproducts.
Why do you think your style of training is not more commonly practiced?
DW: Our style of training is not beneficial to the doctors and surgeons. The economy takes a hit when athletes are not getting injured at an alarming rate. Knee injuries are an epidemic and it gets glossed over without people understanding as to why.
Another reason is people’s rigid belief system. I am fortunate to be around a group of guys with open minds. The way students are taught and how athletes are trained to workout is fundamentally flawed without any recourse.
DW: I was blessed to develop a true friendship with Ben Patrick (@kneesovertoesguy) long before ATG was even a thought. From the very first day we met there was a creative spark and we knew we would maintain a friendship and somehow work together in one way or another. Years passed and we both were busy studying, learning, and evolving in our own right.
After many years we ran into each other again, and Ben had built ATG in Clearwater FL. We decided to merge talents and bring ATG to the world with a total new slant on fitness, longevity and sports performance.
There are now 4 of us in the team, Ben, Jeff, Connor and myself. Besides the unorthodox training style that incorporates strength, flexibility, and has merged them into movements never seen before, we all have unique abilities that mold perfectly together.
Ben has overcome 3 knee surgeries, non-ideal genetics, and has taken himself from a 19” vertical to an over 42” vertical. Ben is a knee and joint specialist, literally creating miracles daily.
Jeff has a powerlifting, gymnast and flexibility background, and brings his expertise in all. Jeff is muscular and strong with fluid flexibility all in one.
Connor is quite possibly the highest jumper on the planet. He has the knowledge of tendon health and explosiveness. Connor is a Pro Dunker and helps athletes use our workouts and transitions them into superior athleticism.
I am in my 40’s and still jump, run and play as I did in college. I bring the component of long-term health and longevity.
