How Boston Native Ben Mezrich Keeps Happy and Healthy

As a writer, producer and New York Times Bestselling Author, Ben Mezrich must keep in tip-top health to survive those tough Boston, Massachusetts winters where he was born, raised, and still resides.

Down Time

For massages, I love the zen-like atmosphere of the Mandarin Spa. It’s the only spa in town with a full-size hot tub in the locker room, and the hotel is incredible at creating a personalized experience as well as guarding your privacy if that’s something that matters to you.

Nutritionists/chefs

For chef’s, we love Jen Royle and Aussie Sammy. Jen just opened her own restaurant, Table, so she’s not around as much for private catering, but if you can make it on to her schedule it’s highly worth it. We found her by a friend’s recommendation, and she catered our daughter's birthday party.

Aussie Sammy Jackson is a great chef and caterer for dinner parties or events. We met him through a friend who was hosting a cooking class dinner party. He’s Aussie but he excels at Asian cuisine as well. He is known for his KO pies, which are akin to the meat pies that you find in the south. So be sure to ask him to bring some of those along for the event too.

Personal Trainers

I haven’t used a personal trainer in a while, but I consider all of the instructors at Flywheel sort of my own team of personal trainers. I especially love Colin Batty's class. It’s not the controversial Christmas gift like Peleton-- you have others riding alongside you in real-time, which can be comforting, unless it’s my wife who’s always trying to talk to me during class. Colin plays a great song list and has a matching upbeat personality.

Dressing the Part

I have been a huge fan of Indochino. They are luxury looks without the luxury price tag. They can custom build your suit and have it to you in less than 2 weeks for under $500. I had a great experience at the Newbury Street location with Hugh Nguyen. He measured me with an iPad and helped me select fabrics to custom build one of my favorite suits, a royal blue number inspired by Jude Law’s portrayal in The Talented Mr. Ripley. I’m no Jude Law, but if you can believe it, I did share a space with him on the People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive List.

Good Cuts

I have used Anthony “Tony” Capalino since way back in my days of frosted tips in the 90’s. He has his own salon in Somerville but makes house calls for VIP’s, which I have somehow qualified for.

Eyecare

Eyes are the windows to the soul. I’ve had a great experience at Mass Eye and Ear with Dr. Grayson Armstrong. The whole hospital is incredible. They took such great care of me when I had a crazy eye issue that flared up in New York City when I was on location working on Billions. There’s no comparison between NY hospitals and Boston hospitals. We have them beat by a long shot!

Power lunch

For quick power lunches, I have been enjoying Zuma at One Dalton. The lunch menu is quick, reasonable and the atmosphere is perfect for a business lunch.

Date Night

For date night dinners our goto is Mistral. It’s been consistent over the past 10 years and never fails to prepare my steak and fries exactly how I like them—well done!

For the Kids

For kids' activities we have really enjoyed the ski school up in Quechee Vermont, there’s an apres-ski for the kids and adults too every Saturday that rivals any Vail or Aspen apres ski.

For sharpening my ice skates to keep up with my son’s hockey-playing, I like the guys at Thuro on Rt. 9. They have a great frequent sharpener program.

For hockey gear we love Pure Hockey, the staff there are knowledgeable and will help you with any fitting needs. Can you tell I’m a hockey dad?

The 'Little' Things in Life

For branding and ad design, I love Fuse Ideas. They have built their firm originally handling the ad campaigns for TV shows like Madmen and Game of Thrones, and we are lucky enough to have them in our backyard. Ask for Dennis Franczak, he’s the CEO and founder.

Some of my favorite local bookstores are: Brookline Booksmith, Winchester Book Ends, Harvard Bookstore, Berry and Co Sag Harbor, Books and Books in Miami, Classic Bookshop in Palm Beach, The Strand, Book Soup in West Hollywood. The Indies always have a great staff that helps guide you into selecting the perfect book and all of the above have great children’s sections.

For photographers for headshots, I love Russ Mezikofsky. He’s been doing my headshot for years now as well as our holiday card photo and event coverage. He’s personable, likable, and does a very fast turn around for photos.

For event photography we love Michael Blanchard. He has been working the charity circuit for years now and knows all of the big hitters, not to mention, his photos are beautiful.

For DJ’s we always count on the Dimare brothers. Met Rich during his stint at the KISS 108 Matty in the Morning Show. He and his little bro do a mean job turning up the tunes at your event. And they aren’t bad on the eyes either, according to my wife and her friends!

For our aging pug, we love the ease of having a concierge vet who comes to our home. We use Dr. Jake Tedaldi from the Dr. Jake segment on NECN. He’s like the dog whisperer of vets. Our pug gets white coat anxiety and somehow with this vet it’s a totally different story. He wags his tail and is happy to see Dr. Jake!
