For Austin-based interior designer Marcus Mohon, this past year was one for the books. “I received a statewide John Staub Award. ... [My wife] Autumn and I sent our eldest off to college,” recounts the designer. “And in January, we raised a toast to my 50th birthday.” Another milestone: The acclaimed design pro opened an office in Houston. “This city has always felt like a home away from home,” offers Mohon, who has had clients in the Bayou City for years. “The creative dialogue flowing through this city is unparalleled.” Not unlike his design projects, his personal style is traditional with a bit of an edge, and most of all, approachable. Here, he gives us the lowdown.

If there were 26 hours in a day, I would spend more time with my kids.

My ride: Mercedes E400

My earliest style memory is wearing a maroon velvet tuxedo for Christmas at the age of 5 in 1975.

The worst fashion faux pas is sloppy T-shirts.

Bruno Magli is my favorite shoe designer.

I am most confident when I wear my white denim jacket with my salmon jeans. Decked out in those two pieces, I can take on the world.

Bow tie or traditional necktie? Both

My wife, Autumn, keeps me sane.

My go-to vice: Margaritas

If I could turn back time, I would tell myself to double major in design and art history the first time around.

In 10 years I hope I will be doing exactly what I’m doing right now.
