Famed New York City street photographer Bill Cunningham once said, “Fashion is the armor to survive the reality of everyday life.” And he very well might have been right. Dress Rehearsal, one of Oceanside Museum of Art’s current exhibitions, explores a plethora of themes related to fashion through sculpture, installation, painting, photography and collage. Exhibition curator Kate Stern adds, “Some of the works reference personal and historical struggles placed upon woman by society both in the past and, sadly, still today. Others address the importance of play and are celebratory.” And as the title suggests, expect a theatrical influence. “Just as theater invites us in and plays with and distorts reality, so does this exhibition, by using the very nature of the dresses and our preconceptions of what we choose to cover ourselves with,” says Stern.
