When David Sutherland launched Sutherland Furniture (sutherlandfurniture.com) in 1994, the Dallas-based outdoor furnishings brand was one of the first to bring luxury living outside. “Up until that time, outdoor furniture consisted of English garden benches,” Sutherland says. “Furniture was meant for sitting around the pool. It wasn’t unusual to see a million-dollar home with a $100,000 great room that looked out onto plastic furniture.” Sutherland saw an opportunity to enliven the outdoor living category and tapped John Hutton of Donghia to design the initial collection. “[Hutton’s] vision was outdoor furniture that was as well-designed and comfortable as indoor furniture,” he says. “All of his designs required a lot of cushioning.” The resulting collection centered on upholstered teak pieces with sleek lines and elegant curves. Sutherland was the first company to introduce fully upholstered outdoor collections. For the brand’s next chapter, expect to see the classic, graceful designs that have been a part of Sutherland Furniture from the start: “We’re not interested in the latest additive or uninspiring addition to a piece of furniture,” says Sutherland. “We’re interested in seeing our progress from an evolutionary standpoint.”
