Bernard Chiu

Bostonian businessman Bernard Chiu has been living in Massachusetts since the early 1980’s after making the transition from life in Hong Kong to life in America. Chiu, who doesn’t have an official degree, has established over 100 U.S. patents in attempts to simplify people’s lives. “I created innovative products to make people’s life easier,” says Chiu. Aside from being the chairman and founder of Upland Capital Corporation, Chiu now spends his days in Chestnut Hill, enjoying Celtics games, golfing at one of the New England courses that he built, and riding around in his Porsche 911.

Hometown?

I grew up in Hong Kong and have been living in the Boston area since early 1980’s.

Place you call home now (neighborhood etc)?

Chestnut Hill.

Any notes on your education?

Half a marketing and half an engineer but I don’t have an official degree.

Favorite sport to watch?

I enjoy watching all kinds of sports, particularly the Celtics.

Favorite sport to play?

Golf, so much so that I built a couple of golf courses in New England.

Best vacation ever?

My first trip to South Africa was three years ago. I love it and want to explore the rest of Africa.

Dream trip destination?

I am ready to see animal migration in Africa.

Favorite dinner?

B’s Lobster at Bettini in Martha’s Vineyard.

Favorite dessert?

Roxana’s Rainbow Cookie has become my favorite dessert.

Dish you’re best at cooking?

My Little Clam Pasta never disappoints.

Road trip -- three in the car with you. Living or dead. Who are they? Why?

I vividly remember a trip I had with two guys driving on a winding road from San Francisco in the Redwood forest to Oregon. Ship your favorite car there, if you ever want to try that.

Favorite movies?

I can’t remember how many times I watched Top Gun.

Car you drive now?

Porsche 911 Convertible.

Car you’d like to drive?

Another Porsche 911?

Best car you've owned?

Mercedes Gullwing.

Motorcycle?

Not my cup of tea.

Wear a watch?

I seldom wear watches. If we do, I rotate my collection of Patek Phillipe and Rolexes.

Got a favorite watch?

The stainless steel Daytona.

Got a dream watch?

I got it all.

Summer drink of choice?

Hot coffee is my go to drink in the morning year round. It sounds boring but I like it.

Bourbon or Scotch?

I discovered Port when I bought a company in Portugal. The purchase unbeknown to me came with 500 bottles of very special Port. It has become my favorite after meal drink since then.

Go-to red on a wine list?

Opus One.

Favorite beach?

South Beach, Martha’s Vineyard and Miami Beach.

On a Saturday, your favorite errand to run is?

I don’t really enjoy running errands on the weekend.

Otherwise, you’ll be busy doing what?

Riding my bike and hiking wherever I can.

Best work advice you ever got?

Learn to love what I do.

Best thing about your career?

I report to no one.

What do you do now for work? Tell us something about your work and career path.

I am inventors of over 100 U.S.patents. I created innovative products to make people’s life easier. I now run my investment firm in commercial real estate and hotel. It is a big change jumping from consumer products to real estate. The challenge makes it interesting for me.

Do you have any philanthropic interests/endeavors?

I am happy that I am part of the solution in today’s problems.

I pick up my hard copy of Wall Street Journal and the Boston Globe every morning. There is no tablet that can replace the papers and magazines in the morning.
